What is Craniosacral Massage Therapy?

Craniosacral Massage: A Gentle Path to Healing

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle, non-invasive form of bodywork that focuses on relieving tension and enhancing the body’s natural healing abilities. Rooted in osteopathy, this therapy works by manipulating the craniosacral system, which consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

What to Expect with Craniosacral Massage Therapy

During a craniosacral therapy session, the therapist uses light touch, typically no more than the weight of a nickel, to assess the craniosacral rhythm. This rhythm is created by the ebb and flow of cerebrospinal fluid within the craniosacral system. The therapist gently manipulates the bones of the skull, spine, and pelvis to release restrictions and restore balance.

It’s believed that by addressing the craniosacral system, CST can positively impact the entire body. Specifically, craniosacral thepary aims to:

  • Improve the function of the central nervous system.
  • Enhance the body’s ability to self-correct.
  • Alleviate pain and dysfunction.

The Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy

There are a wide range of potential benefits from CST sessions, including:

Reduction of Chronic Pain
CST may help alleviate chronic pain conditions such as migraines, neck pain, and back pain by relieving tension and improving nervous system function.

Stress Relief
The gentle nature of CST promotes relaxation and reduces stress, making it an effective therapy for those dealing with anxiety and tension.

Enhanced Immune Function
By optimizing the body’s natural healing processes, CST can boost the immune system and overall health.

Improved Sleep
Many individuals report better sleep quality after CST sessions, as the therapy helps to calm the nervous system.

Support for Trauma Recovery
CST can be beneficial for individuals recovering from physical or emotional trauma, as it promotes gentle healing and release of stored tension.

What to Expect During a Session

A typical craniosacral therapy session can be scheduled for 60 or 90 minutes. If you are only receiving CST, you can lie fully clothed on a massage table. I’ll use light touch to assess and manipulate the craniosacral rhythm. The experience is generally very relaxing, and clients may feel a sense of calm and well-being during and after the session.

Can I Customize my Massage Session?

With most massage therapists you can not. However, you can with me! For example, you can request a custom massage with Craniosacral and Swedish Massage. I am the only therapist offering CST, so you’ll need to book with me directly online. Just book your CST massage session online, and when you come in for your appointment we can discuss the customization of your massage.

Of course, you’ll want to be mindful of your massage time. For example, if you were to book a 30 minute massage with me for Swedish, it would not be possible to customize your massage by combining it with CST.

Is Craniosacral Massage Safe for Everyone?

While CST is considered safe for most individuals, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new therapy, especially for those with serious medical conditions.

If any of the following apply to you, CST should be avoided:

  • You have a severe bleeding disorder.
  • You have a diagnose aneurysm.
  • You recently had (or have a history of) traumatic head injuries (cranial bleeding, skull fracture, etc.)
  • You are a minor (minors are still developing and can not received CST).

My Professional Recommendation

Whether you are seeking relief from chronic pain, fatigue, general stress, PTSD, or simply wish to promote overall well-being, CST may be a beneficial addition to your health and wellness routine. From my experience, clients absolutely love it and feel lighter and rejuvenated! Keep in mind, it’s best to schedule multiple CST sessions to reap it’s full benefits.
